Regional Stability Hampered by US Breach of Commitments: Qalibaf

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf lashed out at the US for failing to honor its commitments under the Islamabad MoU, saying Washington’s conduct has obstructed stability in the region and further undermined trust in the US.

Qalibaf made the remarks during a meeting with Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, held in Tehran on Monday.

During the meeting, Qalibaf reviewed several instances of US failure to fulfill its commitments under the Islamabad MoU, adding, “The commitments of the two sides under the memorandum of understanding are clear, and it was the US’ failure to honor its commitments that prevented the establishment of stability in the region and created another reason for mistrust of this country.”

Qalibaf, who heads Iran’s negotiating team, also rejected the notion that the Islamic Republic could be influenced by pressure, stressing that Tehran remains determined to pursue implementation of the conditions set out in the memorandum.

“We are pursuing the implementation of the conditions of the memorandum of understanding, and it is the US that must abide by its commitments under the agreement,” he said.

For his part, Munir stressed that he would continue his efforts to help restore stability in the region.

In a separate meeting with Pakistan’s top general, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also called on Washington to change its approach toward Tehran and honor its legal obligations under the Islamabad MoU.

Pezeshkian stressed that the US must fulfill its commitments toward Iran in accordance with international law and Iran’s legitimate rights, warning that Washington’s reliance on “bullying and intimidation” would only complicate implementation of the memorandum.
